WORLD YOUTH GAMES, ATHENS - June 2006
Athens was the destination for Hatfield swimming club member Jonathan Quinn to take part in The World School Games. Jonathan who was sponsored by his school Dame Alice Owens’ was part of a 24 strong team representing English Schools.
Thirty nine Countries including Italy, Australia, China and the Ukraine took part in three days of swimming competition at the 2004 Olympic Aquatic Centre. The
competition was aimed at swimmers aged between 14-17 years and is held every four years, similar to the Olympics.
Jonathan, who celebrated his 16th birthday whilst in Athens had qualified and swum in two individual events. His main event the 400m Individual Medley was swum on day 1 where Jonathan qualified fastest, but he had some strong opposition from an Italian swimmer. In the final that night Jonathan led the way after the fly leg increasing his lead over the Italian in the backstroke and breaststroke, during the final leg the freestyle Jonathan hung on to his lead despite the Italian finishing strong Jonathan took gold and the title of World School Champion by over a second.
Jonathans’ other event the 400m Freestyle came the following day, having qualified in the heats third fastest Jonathan was just beaten into 4th place overall but still an excellent placing being the fastest 16 year old.
Competing against Countries from all over the World was a great experience for Jonathan and will assist him in the future with his international career. The England team of 24 swimmers achieved 17 medals in total which placed them top of the medal table, an outstanding result.
TRI/BIATHLON SUCCESS AND OPEN WATER - May 2006
Five members from Hatfield Swimming Club have reasons to celebrate this month Firstly Matt Vyse has been selected to represent Great Britain in his first Senior International in the LEN Open Water 10K Championships at Vassiviere Limogues in France at the end of June. His selection comes after a successful year where he was crowned Midland District Senior and Junior 5K Champion, North Eastern District 2.5K and 5K champion, Northern District 2.5K champ and National Age Group Gold medallist.
Secondly, sisters Natalie and Faye Barnard both competed in The British Triathlon Championships in Llanelli, for younger sister Faye this was her first British Triathlon and despite crashing into a fallen rider in the cycling section she finished a creditable 11th. Older sister Natalie also experienced difficulties in her race and despite the atrocious weather conditions and having to make costly time repairs to her bike during the race she still managed to finish in second place for her age group.
The fourth club member to be celebrating is Cara Purvis who attended The National Biathlon Championships in Manchester where she triumphed over all other competitors in the Under 16 age group to take the gold medal.
Lastly University of Hertfordshire student Paul Smith travelled to San Remo in Italy to compete in the 3rd round of the Triathlon European Cup series. Paul was competing against a strong field of past World and European champions. This was his first professional race and he knew it was going to be tough with the famous Poggio climb as part of the cycling section. Paul started nervously in the Ocean swim and finished mid-field and feeling slightly sea-sick! During the bike ride Paul managed to catch the leading group only to drop back as the notorious Poggio climb proved to be difficult, but Paul worked hard and after the third lap he had once again caught up and finished the ride in amongst the second group .The run of 10K was solid for Paul and he crossed the finish line in an outstanding 53rd place out of 100 entries in the top half, from a British entry of six Paul finished 3rd, his next race will be The British Elite Championships at Windsor.
