The University of Hertfordshire was the venue for Hatfield Swimming Clubs UK Challenge Open Meet. Over 50 clubs from around the country competed at one of the last qualifying open meets for this years Nationals in July/August.

Jonathan recorded new East Region records in both the 200 and 400 Freestyle and also the 400 Individual Medley, these times were also new county records.

Hatfield UK Challenge
The number of Plymouth Leander athletes who will be attending the 2006 Summer National Championships has risen to 40 following a blistering weekend of fast and quite staggering swimming at the Hatfield UK Challenge Meet at the University of Hertfordshire. 40 Leander athletes travelled across the country to take on the best that the South East and London has to offer and returned having left their name on everybody’s lips.
Spearheaded by Cassandra Patten who was to miss the 200m Butterfly British Senior Short Course record by only 0.8 of second (2:08.85), Callum Murphy, Erin Attrill and Calum Jarvis were all to add their name to this summer’s National team roster for the 11 days of National Championships between 27th July and 6th August. The 8-lane 25m pool at the University of Hertfordshire renowned as one of the fastest pools in the country and with Hatfield themselves the winners of this year’s National Speedo League Cup Final, it seemed only sensible that Leander should pay them a visit to allow the country’s two leading club programmes the opportunity to go head-to-head. The Leander contingent were to take over 20 meet records across the two days of competition.
Patten was in staggering form for one in such heavy training. No less than six PL short course Senior records were to fall to the 19 year-old. Following her valiant British record attempt, Patten claimed five further PL records with wins in the 400m IM (4:45.12), 100m Butterfly (1:00.88), 100m Freestyle (57.28) and 50m Freestyle (26.57). Her 50m split time in the 100m Butterfly (29.03) was a further new PL mark. Patten was to add further wins in the 16 years & over 200m Freestyle (2:00.77), 400m Freestyle (4:09.64) and 800m Freestyle (8:32.32). Patten was in even more jubilant mood when on her return she was to discover that she had been selected to compete for Great Britain from the 15th – 18th June in the FINA Open Water World Cup in Seville, her first opportunity to compete over 10km, the open water distance that will be introduced for the first time at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Known as the ‘Sevilla Swim Marathon’, $10,000 US is offered in prize money for the race which takes place in the Guadalquivir River in Spain. Further details on the event can be seen at http://www.imd.sevilla.org/portada.htm
Six gold medals were to befall Samantha Conroy in the 13 years age group, with Conroy producing outstanding times throughout the meet. Victories in the 100m Backstroke (1:08.58), 400m IM (5:08.57), 100m Breaststroke (1:17.88), 200m IM (2:29.90), 200m Breaststroke (2:45.30) and 200m Backstroke (2:25.75) showed no chinks in her armour. In the 10/11 years age band, Erin Attrill was also in the form of her life, taking gold in the 100m Backstroke (1:13.68), 200m Butterfly (2:47.20), 100m Freestyle (1:07.49) and 100m Butterfly (1:17.65).
Adam John was to join Attrill with four gold medals, with the British record holder ensuring wins in the 14 years 100m Backstroke (59.48), 400m Freestyle (4:14.28), 200m IM (2:15.09) and 200m Backstroke (2:07.25), the latter being a new Club Junior short course record. Laura Froshaug was once again to demonstrate why she will be a force to be reckoned with at this summer’s National Age Championships, taking no prisoners in winning the 13 years 200m (2:09.46), 400m (4:32.18) and 800m Freestyle (9:07.21). Team-mate Charlotte Foulds was to clinch a new Club Junior record in the 14/15 years 200m Breaststroke (2:42.95) for gold, matching this with a further triumph in the 100m version (1:15.27).
Amy Ballantyne was to win both the 14/15 years 200m Butterfly (2:21.23) and 800m Freestyle (9:02.32) in some style with Sophie Collier also taking two fine wins in this age group, courtesy of the 400m IM (4:58.95) and 200m Backstroke (2:19.81). The 16 years & over 50m Freestyle was dominated by Joe Tellett (23.83), with Tabitha Chivers finding similar success in the 13 years 100m Butterfly (1:10.00). Joe Patching was to ensure an additional win in the 10/12 years 400m Freestyle (4:41.56), as was Lucy Patten in the 14 years 1500m Freestyle (18:07.08).
Mark Conroy continued the winning ways in the 15/16 years 100m Breaststroke (1:08.20), followed up with gold from Calum Jarvis in the 14 years 1500m Freestyle (17:15.60) and Rosie Andrews in the 12 years 800m Freestyle (9:46.43). Silver medals were aplenty and were to be taken by Louis Nicholls, Kelcey Pillage, Hannah Cunningham, Joe Parker, Matthew Collier, Megan Bushnell, Anthony O’Driscoll, Daniel Jones, Callum Murphy, and Alistair Maclean. Bronze awards were the order of the day for Bo Cameron and Ryan Hart.
