Another Major victory for Hatfield
16 February 2005
SWIMMERS from the Hatfield club recorded their second Herts Major League success of the year at Borehamwood.
Having already won the first round of the county competition, Hatfield's swimmers consolidated their position as the top club in Hertfordshire with another impressive team showing at the Venue pool.
University of Hertfordshire student John Sargent took first place in the open 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke events.
The open boys' freestyle relay team of Ben Brown, Jamie Irvine, Matt Vyse and Alex Lodge also finished in first place.
Joanna Burrows and Pippa Tappin, swimming in the girls' open age group, also took first places in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke events.
They then teamed up with Charlotte Lennox and Hayley Finlayson to take first place in the girls' medley relay.
Hatfield's U16 boys totally dominated their age group with Jonathan Quinn winning both the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
Jon Bending won the 100m butterfly and Mehmet Gundogdu also continued on from his success at the recent Biggleswade open meet, where he was awarded top boy for his age group.
Mehmet completed the club's domination of the individual events by winning the 100m breaststroke.
He was then joined by Quinn, Bending and Michael Healey to win both the freestyle and medley relays.
The Under-16 girls' team of Rachael Oborne, Sophie Redwing, Laura Smith and Laura Kenwell finished first in both their medley and freestyle relays.
The U14 boys' team of Sean Brown, Callum Candy, George Brown and Bevan Daniels were successful in the 100m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke events.
They continued their winning ways by also taking first place in both relays.
Jenni Kenwell, swimming in the girls' U14 section, was Hatfield's only swimmer to finish in first place, winning the 100m freestyle.
Katie Quinn, Jonathan's sister, swum another excellent 100m breaststroke race, only to be placed second with an identical time to the first-placed girl from Cheshunt
Luca Poli was Hatfield's only winner in the youngest age group, taking the U12 boys' 50m breaststroke honours.
Hatfield completed the evening by winning the squadron race by over half a length to finish 50 points clear of runners-up Cheshunt.
The winning club achieved 22 victories from 49 races and go into the Division One final as clear favourites to regain the Herts Major League Championship.
